Wahlstrom named new GM of the Portland Jr. Pirates

Saco, Maine - The Maine Hockey Group has announced that Joakim Wahlstrom, current Director of Hockey Operations for the Maine Hockey Group, has been named its new General Manager of Maine Hockey Group, LLC and the Portland Junior Pirates organization, effective December 1st. Sean O’Brien, will remain a partner with Ron Cain and Mark Anthoine and will focus on corporate sales, the ongoing development of the upcoming ice hockey summer camps and program, as well as the establishment of the new ice hockey retail store expected to open at the MHG Ice Centre in Saco, Maine during the first quarter of 2009.

In his new role as General Manager, Wahlstrom will be responsible for the oversight and management of the entire organization and rink facility, working closely with its Youth hockey program, Junior hockey program, and their respective staffs and volunteers.

“Joakim has demonstrated, in a short period of time with us, that his combination of hockey experience and business management experience is a great fit for our organization’s needs for its continued development. We are excited to have such an individual become a significant and integral part of our organization”, says MHG, LLC partner Ron Cain.

Wahlstrom has extensive experience in the business world, serving in executive management positions during his prior business workings. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1987 from Stockholm University School of Business in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1991, he received his Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maine. In addition to his two undergraduate degrees, he received his Masters degree in Advanced Management from Harvard University in 2005.

In addition to his accomplished business experience, Wahlstrom enjoyed a 22 year hockey career. In his native country of Sweden, he played in the Swedish Elite League from 1976 to 1986 and spent ten years with the AIK and DIF hockey organizations in Stockholm. He has two Junior World appearances in both Austria and Moscow, and played professional hockey in Sweden for seven years. While at the University of Maine, Orono, he played Division I hockey in addition to soccer and football. An impressive all-around athlete, Wahlstrom also has enjoyed international experience in both sailing and skiing.

Wahlstrom resides in Cumberland, Maine, with his wife, Penny, their daughter, Alexandra (age 10) and their son Oliver (age 8).
